Qalixa uses two different standards:

Ø  UNSPCS

Ø  eODT

The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPSC) provide an open, global multi-sector standard for efficient, accurate hierarchical classification of products and services. UNSPSC numerically organizes and describes commodities that organizations supply and/or purchase to facilitate electronic procurement. Classifications for goods and services are organized into a four-tier hierarchy of categories based on shared characteristics.

·       How does UNSPSC work?

The overall structure of UNSPSC follows the supply chain. It begins with raw materials; then progresses through industrial manufacturing equipment, components and supplies to manufactured products; and concludes with services.

UNSPSC uses 8-digit numeric codes to describe and identify relationships between categories and individual commodities.

It begins with the broad Segments and becomes more specific at each level. In the example below, the zeros diminish through the hierarchy to Commodity. The 8-digit codes give the user the ability to identify and analyze expenditure details using Class or Commodity information and to report it at Family or Segment.

Ø  81000000 Segment – a wide category of generally similar commodities, e.g. Engineering and Research and Technology Based Services

Ø  81110000 Family – a distinct group of related commodities in the same Segment e.g. Computer Services

Ø  81111800 Class – a specific group of commodities clearly related to each other and dissimilar to others in the same Family, eg System Administrators

Ø  81111812 Commodity – a unique commodity that shares some characteristics with others in its class, family and segment, eg Computer Hardware Maintenance or Support.

At Commodity level, products and services are equal even though they have different monetary values. For example:

Product Example:

44000000 – Office equipment & accessories & supplies
44120000 – Office supplies
44121700 – Writing instruments
44121701 – Rollerball pens

Service Example:

78000000 – Transportation & storage & mail services
78130000 – Storage
78131800 – Specialised warehousing & storage
78131804 – Document storage services

Ø  It is a comprehensive system that covers both products and services.

Ø  It is designed for e-commerce and e-procurement systems.

Ø  It has a four-tier hierarchy to provide granular detail.

Ø  It is used by both private companies and the public sector in countries around the world.

Ø  It is a global, non-proprietary system that is freely available on the internet.

Ø  It is independently managed and frequently updated with contributions made by industry specialists around the world.

There are many ways to find the UNSPSC you are looking for. Because UNSPSC has a hierarchical structure, a commonly used method is to start at the broad segment level and drill down to the commodity. Regular users also know that UNSPSC divides products from services into separate segments.

Sometimes, a commodity may be difficult to find because of the different ways people use to say the same thing.

Qalixa search assist you to find appropriate UNSPSC classification. There are two different methods for finding right classification.

Ø  Text or UNSPSC code searching

o   Use simple search

o   Select the “category” in first drop down menu from left.

o   Select an appropriate category in the last drop down menu from left. You can also search entire UNSPCS by not selecting any category.

o   Type your text or UNSPSC code for matching words in UNSPSC hierarchy.

Ø  Browse by category

o   Click on Browse by category

o   Browse through the UNSPCS segments, Families, Classes and Commodities. The UNSPCS categories are grouped as:

§  Raw Materials (10-15)

§  Industrial Equipment  (20-27)

§  Equipment Components & Supplies (30-41)

§  Manufactured Products (42-60)

§  Services (70-94)

Synonyms are used in the selection of the most appropriate match to one UNSPCS calcification. Seller can find best match for registration of product and services and buyer can use synonym search to find right category for further product search.

The eODT (ECCMA Open Technical Dictionary) is a dictionary of terminology where attributes and synonyms are linked to UNSPSC’s product and service identifiers. The eODT is a open standard and developed by the ECCMA, Electronic Commerce Code Management Association.

Adding attributes to the UNSPSC’s product and service identifiers have two purposes:

Ø  Seller can add searchable characteristics to a product. By adding attributes, selling product competes with other products not only on price but also on all other characteristics. So seller’s specific product can be found more easily.

Ø  Buyer can in a fastest way find a specific product with right characteristics in an ocean of data.

Synonyms are used in the selection of the most appropriate match to one UNSPCS calcification. Seller can find best match for registration of product and services and buyer can use synonym search to find right category for further product search.

There are 3 types of attributes:

Ø  Verified B2B attributes from eODT

Ø  Verified B2C and C2C attributes from Qalixa

Ø  Unverified B2B, B2C and C2C attributes from Qalixa users

Attributes which already exist in Qalixa are verified. User cannot change those verified attributes. Each UNSPCS commodity has its own rang of attributes. When registering a new product or service verified attributes will be suggested to you for adding to your product or service. Verified attributes are tagged as "Verified" in Qalixa.

Unverified attributes are created by users of Qalixa. When registering a new product or service unverified attributes created by other users will be suggested to you for adding to your product or service. Unverified attributes are tagged as "Unverified" in Qalixa.

Qalixa uses verified attribute for filtering the search result.
